Dermal Enhancements
Our focus is on building and nurturing client relationships through trust. With over 24 certifications/diplomas in permanent makeup, beauty, and skin care, our clients are assured the finest quality service and post-service. We ensure our clients are educated before making any decisions and insist that fees remain approachable and accessible. Permanent makeup and beautiful skin are not a luxury anymore. It is about providing solutions, improving confidence, giving back a few extra minutes in the day, even giving back a few years.
Medical micropigmentation involves working with clients who require areola tattoo following breast surgery, addressing balding patches on the head or beard, applying lip tattoo to detract from cleft lip scars, and much more.
During one of the Covid lockdowns, Katie took advantage of spare time and became a skin care formulator. While Dermal Enhancements retails some of the finest brands of care, we also make in house some products of our own and will customise products for unique skin requirements.
With our growing body of work and a happy client base, we anticipate Dermal Enhancements to continue to grow to become Northern Ontario’s premier studio and clinic. Look about for photos and information. Check out our Facebook and Instagram pages for even more. Feel free to call or reach out to Katie if you have specific questions.
We look forward to seeing you at your appointment.

Katie Smith-Mohamed
Katie Mohamed is a veteran educator having spent over 28 years teaching college, high school, and elementary school, private employment training specializing in curriculum, program development, and student achievement. A serious illness forced a career adjustment and out of a conversation with a friend about her having to travel 8 hours at significant cost for her areola tattoo after her mastectomy and subsequent breast reconstruction surgery, Katie found her new niche. Of course, areola and other medical micropigmentation treatments are advanced so to get there one starts with learning to tattoo eyebrows. From there, Katie attended more training programs and upgraded her skills by studying under multiple permanent makeup masters. Within 18 months, she had her areola certification and continues to take courses virtually since face-to-face permanent makeup training has been placed on hold. By 2022 Katie holds over 20 separate certifications, has studied in Toronto, Ottawa, New York, Miami and Texas and continues to take courses in new techniques. To stay current on the best skin care treatments and products, Katie allocates 3 to 4 hours per week of scientific and cosmetic research.

Katie is the is the only Softap™ technique trained artist in the region and uses it to achieve specific looks or for clients who respond best to a manual method of tattooing. She frequently uses both manual and machine methods in a single treatment to perfect a client’s look. She does not subscribe to the belief that a specific technique must be applied as it is taught. By “reading” the skin, Katie is able to make adjustments and changes to her methodology to ensure the lowest amount of skin trauma. Styles and patterns are based on client preference and not on cookie-cutter approaches which too often do not complement a client’s look.
Today Katie mentors several new artists, reflecting on the early days when she started and nearly quit due to lack of support. Once a teacher, always a teacher! As a gifted writer, Katie has established many connections within the industry by writing website content. From blogs and newsletters, training manuals and biographies, to full website text, product descriptions, taglines and training curriculum, Katie has, in exchange, had the great honour of being mentored and/or trained by some of the industry’s top artists. To that end, it didn’t take long for her to become well known in the field, and trusted for her research skills and ideas, even her treatment methods.

“I am now 4 years into this new venture and I feel secure and confident, not just in my skills and knowledge of the world of tattooing, but also that I know if I ever have a question, I can reach out and get help within a day at most. It feels good to be called or messaged for my thoughts or opinion on things because my clients and colleagues know that if I can’t provide an answer, I can get one.
Permanent makeup and medical micropigmentation are billion-dollar industries internationally but to feel connected and part of a community fills me with gratitude, and I strongly believe it is why I succeeded, after nearly giving up. Today, with my intuition and knowledge I am now developing my own techniques, with outstanding success. Every artist needs to get connected. Failing to do so will impact their growth and skill.”
